Historically, utilities would gather critical information about their networks by deploying field teams to read meters and to physically inspect any faults that may be present. Although the technology has been around since the 1980’s, utilities have only recently taken to making their networks smarter. Smart meters have provided utilities with copious amounts of information pertaining to their network, as well as consumer usage and usage trends. Many utilities are looking for new innovations that will aid in giving a greater visibility and control over their distribution network.
